Growing Joy in Dementia Care... One Garden at a Time

Gardening doesn’t stop with memory loss — and neither does the joy it brings.

At Wentworth Care, we’ve seen how something as simple as planting a herb or picking a cherry tomato can brighten a day.

Our wheelchair-accessible, self-watering wicking planter boxes are making a powerful impact in aged care homes across Australia — especially

for residents living with dementia or young onset dementia.

These raised garden beds are safe, easy to use, and designed to reduce injury and effort — while keeping the connection to nature strong. They support sensory engagement, create a sense of purpose, and foster real moments of joy and calm.

We’ve had so much wonderful feedback from lifestyle teams and carers who say these planter boxes have transformed their memory support gardens.

After exhibiting at the Dementia + Recreation Conference, several of the delegates suggested a Mobile Planter Box that could be moved around inside, especially to visit bed bound residents and bring nature to them. We thought this was such a good idea we went ahead with it!

Have you considered applying for a Grant?

Community Grants

We know that while you might "love" to have these in your gardens, budgets sometimes just don't allow it.  Community Grants could be an option for you.

Tips to Access Community Grants

  • Identify Local Clubs or Venues with Pokies – Search for their websites or visit in person to ask about community support programs.

  • Check Your Local Council’s Website – Councils often administer or promote local grant opportunities from gaming venues.

  • Sign Up to Grant Finder Portals like:

  • Talk to a Local Community Development Officer – Many councils have staff who can guide you toward relevant funding sources.

  • Ask Clubs Directly – Especially RSLs, bowling clubs, and leagues clubs — many have dedicated community grant officers or info on their websites.

  • Bendigo Bank  - if you bank with Bendigo Bank, click here to see what funding options may be available in your area.
