2. Wicking Material: A wicking material, such as a cotton rope, fabric strip, or specially designed wicking mat, is placed in such a way that one end is submerged in the water reservoir and the other end extends into the soil where the plants are growing.

3. Capillary Action: The wicking material utilises capillary action to draw water up from the reservoir into the soil. Capillary action is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of external forces. In this case, water moves through the fibers of the wicking material from the wetter area (the reservoir) to the drier area (the soil).

4. Soil Moisture: As the soil begins to dry out, it pulls more water up from the wicking material, maintaining a consistent level of moisture. This self-regulating system ensures that plants get the water they need as they need it.
